A funny thing happened late Friday night. I was typing away on my computer, my bare feet resting on the bottom shelf of the computer cabinet when I put my feet on the carpet.
Water squelched between my toes.
The hot water heater was leaking, flooding the boiler room and spreading water into my living room and kitchen. My landlord was prompt in telling me how to shut the water off and then showed up with more towels for the carpet. I placed plastic bags over the sodden towels and under the wires. And the plumber arrived the next day.
But what freaked me out was that if I hadn’t been at my computer, I wouldn’t have seen the damage until it was too late. The water would have shorted out the wiring on the floor, the plugs from computer and printer and TV.
I could have lost it all.
Are you backed up? Do you have files and photos in a secure place? I know we say “yeah, yeah” and think it wouldn’t, couldn’t happen to us, but things break. Accidents happen.
Back up your damn files.
Good thing you noticed the water before it was too late! I have an add-on storage and backup device sitting in its unopened box waiting to be used; I should get to that today (yeah, yeah).
And did you? 🙂
