Writers, Back to Work!

The holidays tend to push everything out of the way. It happened to me. That’s okay. But the holidays are done, it’s a new year, and everything is bright and shiny.

So get to work!

What—it’s too cold out? Gloomy? Or you live where the sun is hot and you feel too sluggish?

I understand. I’m in the same situation. So this is what I did.

I called a writer friend and we’re scheduling a two-hour meet. You can do the same thing in one hour—one hour to meet and write. No talking. We’re going to do two hours only because we recognize that one hour will be talking and we’re not going to kid ourselves that I’ll show up at her house and we’ll jump right into work.

Can’t meet? Schedule the hour with your friend anyway. That way you’ll know that as you’re writing for that hour, far, far away, your friend is writing too. Trust me, it helps. It’s like watching a movie on TV with all the commercials even though you own the DVD. At that moment, thousands of people are watching the same show and it’s like you’re in the audience. (That’s my theory, anyway.)

Know no other writers to do this with? Make one up! Pick an author you admire from any century and schedule that hour.

The point is, NO EXCUSES. The house will always need to be cleaned, work outside the home needs to be done, families need attention (so do friends), but if you’re truly a writer, you write. You might need a little help to get going again, that’s all. And Happy New Year!
