Yes, I love candy. And when I saw Dylan’s Candy Bar in Manhattan, there was no way I was going to just walk past.

Lollipops are just the beginning. Jaw breakers, chocolate-covered, well, just about everything, and for the people who crave something that looks like a grown-up’s desire, there were these by the door as I walked in:

But for me, the real prize is downstairs, where their retro candy reigns. Missing a Zagnut bar? Or, right next to the candy necklaces, candy dots that need to be carefully peeled off the paper? This sign, built into the stairs leading you there, is telling the absolute truth:

So, what did I end up buying? Chocolate-covered cashews and pear-flavored JellyBelly jelly beans. I enjoyed the skeptical look of a friend as I gave her a jelly bean to try. “Pear?” she said. “Really?”

I wish I’d had my camera ready at the amazed look on her face. “They really taste like pear!” she said.

Yes, yes they do.

I love the vintage candy “Jersey Filberts.” We called them “mothballs.” Remember? Very hard to find anymore.

If you want some, I think Vermont Country Store still sells them. 😉
