Why Yes, I am a KDrama Addict

Because of the overwhelming popularity of the film Parasite, I feel it’s time to confess.
For me, the addiction to Korean films started with two fantasy films, Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds and Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days. I was spellbound at how exquisite the films were (and really, your best bet is to binge-watch both straight through).
Then I read the Ilona Andrews blog entry about Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, went to viki.com, and promptly fell into the wonderful world of Korean dramas (kdramas, for short). It was a fantastic period piece, funny and heartbreaking but with my preferred requirement—a happy ending.
Still, I lean toward the supernatural and soon found plenty to keep me occupied. The best (and worst) thing about these shows is that they’re finite. Sixteen, maybe twenty episodes, and it’s wrapped up. Best because it’s not a horrible expenditure of time, and worst because I want more.
Another best is that I know very little about the customs and folklore of Korea, so I was often surprised, perplexed, and ultimately satisfied in a way that I haven’t been for a while. I felt jaded with so much of what I was seeing in my country. These shows offered a new perspective.
So here are a few of my favorites:
Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Called “Goblin” instead of “Guardian” in the US)
A goblin, a grim reaper, and a young woman who sees ghosts walk into a bar…
Seriously, take a look. It weaves a tale spanning over 900 years, and the past is imperative to the present, with a romance, a bromance, and magic.
Yes, ignore the film with the same title, this series is nothing like it. A young woman dreams the future and discovers that she’s not the only one with that ability.
Aside from the thriller/romance genre, I love that there’s a reason why the woman and two men dream the future.
Comedy! Romance! Women in one family share the burden of superhero-strong strength and the youngest of them tries to deal with it while wishing only to create video games and live as a normal person. Add her high school crush, her new handsome boss, inept gangsters, and a crazed kidnapper and it’s a feel-good ride to the end.
I hesitated on whether to add this one. It’s an amazing and creepy show. But the ending might be bittersweet to some, although I prefer to believe in hope. 😉
A hotel that caters only to dead souls needs a human manager to deal with the mundane, such as property taxes. But the new manager isn’t exactly willing, and the owner of the hotel is a beautiful, capricious woman cursed to remaining there for over a thousand years with secrets that slowly unravel.
